MR RABIE'S SPECIALIST EXPERTISE

CATARACT SURGERY

Mr Rabie is a highly experienced cataract surgeon who has performed thousands of cataract procedures, including complex cases.

His vitreoretinal expertise provides an additional level of surgical experience in managing complex cataracts and complications that can occasionally arise during or following cataract surgery.

He provides personalised cataract surgery, with the treatment and lens choice tailored to each patient's eyes, prescription, lifestyle and visual priorities. A range of lens options is available for suitable patients, including monofocal, enhanced monofocal, toric and extended depth of focus (EDoF), multifocal and trifocal lenses, with the aim of achieving the best possible visual outcome for each individual.

VITRECTOMY & RETINAL SURGERY

Mr Rabie specialises in vitreoretinal surgery, including vitrectomy for retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane (ERM), macular hole and troublesome vitreous floaters.

Vitrectomy is a microsurgical procedure in which the vitreous gel inside the eye is removed, allowing the retina and macula to be treated where required. The precise surgical approach depends on the underlying condition and the individual patient's eye.

For epiretinal membrane and macular hole, surgery may involve delicate removal of membranes from the surface of the macula to improve or preserve central vision. For retinal detachment, vitrectomy may be combined with retinal laser and a gas or oil tamponade, depending on the nature and complexity of the detachment.

For selected patients significantly affected by vitreous floaters, vitrectomy may also be considered after careful assessment and discussion of the potential benefits and risks.

Mr Rabie's approach is to assess each patient individually, explain whether surgery is appropriate and discuss the expected benefits, limitations, alternatives and potential risks before proceeding.

MEDICAL RETINA & MACULAR CONDITIONS

Mr Rabie provides specialist assessment and management of a range of retinal and macular conditions that do not usually require surgery, including diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal vein occlusion and other retinal vascular and macular conditions.

Assessment may include detailed retinal examination and advanced imaging such as OCT, allowing changes within the retina and macula to be identified, monitored and compared over time.

Treatment depends on the underlying condition and its effect on vision. Some patients require careful monitoring alone, while others may benefit from treatments such as intravitreal injections, where clinically appropriate.

Mr Rabie provides an individualised approach, explaining the diagnosis, its likely effect on vision and the available treatment and monitoring options, with ongoing follow-up tailored to each patient's condition.

APHAKIA & SECONDARY LENS IMPLANTATION

Aphakia is the absence of the natural lens of the eye, usually following previous cataract surgery where an artificial intraocular lens could not be implanted, or where a previously implanted lens has subsequently been removed.

Without a lens, vision is usually significantly blurred and requires optical correction. In suitable patients, vision can be restored with a secondary intraocular lens (IOL).

Mr Rabie specialises in the assessment and surgical management of aphakia, including complex cases where there is insufficient capsular support for a conventional lens implant. Depending on the individual eye, options may include scleral-fixated, iris-fixated or other secondary lens techniques.

Each case is carefully assessed to determine the most appropriate lens and fixation method, taking into account the health of the cornea, iris, retina and remaining capsular support, with the aim of achieving the best possible visual and refractive outcome.

GENERAL EYE CONDITIONS & LASER TREATMENTS

Mr Rabie provides assessment and treatment for a wide range of general eye conditions, including blurred or changing vision, red or uncomfortable eyes, flashes and floaters, raised eye pressure and other common eye concerns including dry eye disease, persistent or complex symptoms such as burning, grittiness, watering, fluctuating vision and eye discomfort. Assessment aims to identify the underlying cause and tailor treatment accordingly.

A range of ophthalmic laser treatments is also available where clinically appropriate, including YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification following cataract surgery and SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) to help lower eye pressure in suitable patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Whether you have a specific diagnosis or simply have concerns about your eyes or vision, a comprehensive assessment can be arranged to establish the cause and discuss the most appropriate treatment or follow-up.
